i have a problem guys  !my faithfull 899 s is sick. the full story; my excpansion bottle started leaking some weeks back. i got a new second hand one and fitted it. thought while i was at it id flush the coolant system too. refilled and bled out the system. then she started running a bit hot on the motorway, just under 100 degrees. the thermostat was sticking, must have dislodged some crud when flushing. replaced it an all was great, for a while, then i noticed she was losing coolant,i check oil and water each morning. no visible leeks. she wasnt running as well as usual so took a look at the plugs 2 3 4 where great but number one was a bit wet ish. i think my head gasket is going now! no oil in water and vice verser. any thoughts/advice would be very welcome. the cars only done about 80k and ive had her since 23k. i never over rev or stress the engine and its not been overheated.

It does sound like head gasket, sorry to say.

It's usually corrosion that breaches the gasket rather than abuse.

yea thanks guys didnt really want to beleave it! i put some bars leak sealer in and now she runs great. so that confirms it im afraid. i would definatly not use this stuff normaly but i need to buy some time until i can replace the gasket. mot on wednesday too! :x my local motor factors priced me a head set from fae i think it was. ive always used payen gaskets on austin rover cars and swear by them ,for austins. any thoughts on fae or it might of been fai gaskets guys? £25 plus vat is what i can get it for. im planning on keeping this car for as long as possible so id rather pay what it takes for a good head set now rather than do it again in the future. could you recomend a good make of gasket please or should i just go to fiat?

Spesso are the best gaskets going, but they aren't the cheapest. As with all jobs, preparation and thoroughness will mean that a new gasket will last longer - clean the block down and skim the head while it's off. Worth lapping the valves in, too.
