I need to change the core plug behind the flywheel (1108), which from the looks of it means the flywheel needs to come off :roll:

So this means a few questions are in order.

1. Does anything on the flywheel need to be aligned, or can I just remove it and put it back on willynilly ?
2. What is the correct way to lock the flywheel, as currently it just wants to spin when trying to undo the little bolts..
3. Any advice on the best way to replace the core plug, or is it a case of pulling out the old one with something pointy, cleaning the mating surfaces then gently knocking the new one back in.

It's always prudent to refit it in the same position. It's not necessary for ignition timimg as the front pulley has the crank sensor on it but the flywheel and crank are usually balanced together during assembly.

You'll have the gearbox out obviously so what I normally do is refit one of the bell housing bolts and then use a large flat bladed screw driver to lock the flywheel against the bolt.

Core plug removal depends on its size. Large ones tend to spin when knocked in on one side with a punch, just grab it with a good pair of pliers. Medium, punch a hole with a small sharp chisel and pry out taking care not to catch the faces. Small ones I use a drill bit manually wound in to bite it and then wiggle it out. When refitting the new one use some areldite to seal it on a clean face. Did a s**t load of them on Volvo 400s', never had a leak when we started to use it

Cheers for that. the engine is sat on my patio, so the gearbox and clutch is already off. It's a big 50mm plug so should be easy enough to get out using your method 8)
