Mine was a low boost, no decomp plate.

I can't remember what thickness it was, 3mm sounds a bit more than I was expecting. Ideally you could do with working out what a given thickness sandwich plate would reduce the CR by (factor in the gaskets too), and then make any decision on that. I wouldn't advocate guesswork. Might be worth bearing in mind that Spesso do (or did) a variety of thicknesses of head gaskets for FIRE blocks.

vAD used to mill 2mm off the piston crowns flat for their original high-boost conversions, but this isn't a particularly sustainable way of doing it, as it reduces the rim of the crown above the uppermost ring making it a weak-spot.

I have some notes somewhere and the calculations from my dished pistons, and a spacer gasket somewhere else. I'll see what I can dig up.

That's what I ultimately wanted to hear since I'm only going low boost for now, cheers Pete :D
What boost did yours run Pete?

Since I'm currently running a mls head gasket it should be able to cope with the boost a bit better, well hopefully any way :?

I'd like to see that info Helen, would be a great help for if and when I turn up the boost

I think that sounds like a sensible starting point to me, am I right in thinking the low boost vad's ran .6 bar?

Mine ran 0.3bar when first done by vAD as low boost with standard internals and Cosworth yellow injector.......then increased to 0.55bar when I got dished pistons, an intercooler and a green injector.

The original vAD high boosts ran 0.6bar with machined pistons, intercooler, green injector and a Superchips remap to retard the timing slightly.

They fell out with Superchips and then stopped offering the higher boost version.

Funny isn't it, referring to 0.6 bar as "high boost"

The original Smart's used to run 0.6 bar on boost or 0.8 bar for a short period of over boost, around about 10seconds max. However that one my mate had used to run at around 1.8-2.0 bar when he fitted the bigger turbo. I'm still amazed that it never blew the block or anything in the engine.

Thanks guy's, wouldn't be able to do it without your previous turbo advice

The turbo arrived yesterday along with the guarantee for it, the performance graph from the balancing stage and the oil feed pipes so i was a happy bunny :D

Was the yellow injector from a sierra cosworth? I may be wrong but didn't they also run th Saab 9000 turbo injector too? It's a shame vad went bust, I wounder if they could be any help still.

Mine ran a green injector, think it was a Cosworth one but can't be certain.

Yellow and green are specs of Sierra Cosworth injector.

There are plenty around if you search "cosworth green injector":

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=c ... +injectors

Or yellow:

I'm sure there are lots of options for alternatives too (I don't know about Saab, very possible, I've tended to keep my head down about turbo stuff), but Cossie yellow or green what I know from experience is suitable.
