After changing the head gasket my 1108 has developed an awful engine rattle under heavy load. It sounds like it is coming from the belt side. I actually thought it sounded like pinking but I have checked and adjusted the timing, but it made no difference.

The oil is fine, the head gasket is on the right way as I double checked and can confirm oil is getting to the cam.

The belts and tensioner is new and quiet, the alternator is also quiet.

Not sure what else to check, hoping its not the bottom end...

Kev.

Could it be pinking?
Not something catching, exhaust near ARB or anything?

I have checked the timing and adjusted it, but it made no difference. Car runs perfect and is pulling strongly.

However the clutch is slipping, I wonder if it could be the springs on the friction plate chattering, I have seen them loose before on old worn clutches. What do you think?

I don't currently have an Arb fitted, so it can't be that.

Strange one, the 1108 doesnt run a rubber insert type bottom pulley does it? Mine used to rattle before i changed it as the rubber had broken up.

IIRC I think only the 1242 have those.

How many miles has the engine done Kevin?

Have a read of:

Interesting part about head gasket failures and subsequent knock. Hope it isn't this, mind.

I believe the engine to have only done about 70k. At the end of the day I got it for free, so if something has gone amiss it's not the end of the world.

Just a shame as it was running perfect before the head gasket went pop :(

It's a solid bottom pully Lee. When it's making the noise if I dip the clutch even a tiny bit the noise stops, which is why I was wondering if it's related to the clutch slip.

Anybody got a spare lump laying about

Pushing the clutch applies a little end load to the crank. Might be worth trying the old VW trick of seeing if you can pull/push the bottom pulley or flywheel looking for end float.

I'd have a look at the suspect clutch too.

Good idea, I will test for end float at the weekend.

I need to get the clutch sorted asap, I just dislike trying to get the gearbox back on more than anything, it's such a pain!

Stick a couple of long studs in the engine block, makes it a lot easier to fit the 'box.
