freddo has developed a tapping noise, could it be the tappets or do they adjust automatically as there hydraulic tappets. this noise could however be normal for the 899 as i have been told mine is very quiet and could've just ran itself in again

The tappets are hydraulic and should self adjust, mine had a manual adjuster on one end but I have never messed with it.

It is common on the 899 for them to be a bit noisy on start up, over time they wear and let the oil escape when the car is parked. Apparently taking them out and cleaning them with paraffin will fix the issue for a while as they can get gummed up, but the ticking will come back eventually.

Mine has always been noisy for the first 15 seconds of running, then they go quiet as they fill with oil leaving me with just the tick from the injector.

You can replace them for new ones or fit manual adjusting tappets from an old Panda.

I've also heard it could be the oil pump on its way out

Maybe, but not somthing I have heard of.

I have read though that the 899 can destroy crank bearings, I actually bought a gearbox from a guy who had this happen and the engine had only done 60k

Crank bearings should live longer if you service it regularly and don't rev the bejesus out of it. They're a 3 main bearing design so will have a little less strength than a FIRE.

The early 899 are adjustable. Slacken off the locking nut and screw in the adjusting screw until it just starts to open the valve and then back off one and a quarter turns then lock it up. The older lifters don't have the length of travel the later ones have and can and do batter themselves to death very quickly if there's excessive clearance. You can retro fit the later lifters but you need the rocker arm complete.
