On a few Cinquecento I maintain the front drivers side wiper goes off the edge of the screen, on the return journey you can hear it clonk against the other wiper as it returns to the parked position.

Now I have had a read and it sounds like the wiper linkage is worn, but what exactly is worn and what is the best way to fix it ? Do Fiat still make the parts which wear out and if so what do they roughly cost ?

Hopefully somebody has a DIY fix which can be done on the cheap :D This time of year with all the rain it is a worry watching the wiper appear in the drivers side window

Wow even with a new linkage  That is worrying... I look forward to stripping it down and working out what is going wrong.

Lee, if the linkage is new, is there play in the wiper arm itself at the base?

This was the issue on the turbo - new arms and problem went away.

You need to replace the wiper arm on the offside. They wear around the hinge pin because of the nature of the speed they pocess and they're never lubricated. Just put a new one on my Sei and cured it. Can't see out the drivers window now though when it's raining from the right!

Arms are both good tight fit on the spindle at the base so dont think its that :?
And thanks for bringing the wiper off the screen situation back to my attention Kev, it was raining last night and it really got on my nerve once again  :chase:

 Your welcome Lee.

I will have a look at the arm first then, will be great if it's that simple as I have a spare arm floating about the garage anyway 8)

It's not the fit on the spindle that wears, it's the hinges. Difficult to explain but there's a wacking great spring there to keep the blade on the screen so you can easily miss it because of the spring tension. Lift the arm slightly off the screen and thry to move it from side to side. Pinch the the hinge with your free hand and you'll feel the movement. Cured this very problem now on 3 Cinquecento and 2 Seis

I concur with 127Jules regarding the play in the arm. Mine had such play so I got a new arm. Alas, it still did it. Next target was the linkage. That was badly worn. A used replacement from a Seicento and now it's like I presume new was.

I also received the early Seicento motor attached to the linkage. The speeds are a lot slower both for 'on', and for manual single wipe. Intermittent timing is a shorter interval between slower wipes.

The weak point, where it fails, is where they extended it for right hand drive use. A p1ss poor tiny ball joint in a gaiter directly under the grill so water drips on to it until it rusts away! I loaded this gaiter with copper grease to give the best chance.

When I looked, new mechanisms were discontinued for the Cinquecento, and maybe £100 for the Sei. Or maybe £160 with the motor.

I think this Sei motor and gearing had two speeds. But the Cinquecento fascia / Stalk switch has only one setting. I forget if I could have chose for it to have the fast speed or not or if I could have fitted different gearing. I appear to have forgotten the details. I do seem to recall that I couldn't get the main nut off which changed the motor. There was not play at all in either motor and I think none in the drive gearing either.

I picked up a fantastic condition wiper arm over the weekend, so will change that and report back. When I checked the arm on the car it was evident that there was a huge amount of play in the arms spring pivot, so it makes sense for that to be the issue in this instance.
